Proposed Rule Alters How the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Applies to Oceans; Would Create a Bad Precedent, Stifle Public Participation

Audubon joined other conservationists in urging the Bush administration to withdraw its proposed procedures for complying with the National Environmental Policy Act when managing ocean fish and to craft a new rule that will protect valuable natural resources while allowing for greater public participation in the environmental review process.

Audubon's Steve Kress stressed the harmful impacts for seabirds. Also participating in the event were Andrea Treece, senior attorney and oceans program for the Center for Biological Diversity; Caitlin Hills, director of the national forest program for American Lands Alliance; and Tony DeFalco, director of regional operations for the Marine Fish Conservation Network.
